Anchorage and the Iditarod...

Thursday, June 15, 2006    We moved to Anchorage yesterday.  I went into Palmer to do the laundry and when I came back Skip decided we should go one day earlier to Anchorage.  He called the RV Park and changed our reservation and we packed up and drove the 35 miles.  We stopped and filled the RV for a total of $166 at $2.89 per gallon.  Two spots down from us in the park are a mother and son who we have been seeing off and on since Skagway.  We exchanged travel stories and then took Lucas for a little walk.  This is a really nice park.  It backs up to a regional park and does have moose and bear come into the RV Park.  We’re still waiting to see that moose!!  The day before we left Palmer we drove out to the Headquarters of the Iditarod Race in Wasilla.  The son of the founder of the race, Joe Redington, was there with a team of dogs.  For $10 he would take you on a quarter mile ride on a make shift sled that the dog team would pull.  Actually, it looked like an ATV that had benches put on it.  We did not take ride.  Skip did pet the dogs.  We went into the visitor center and watched a video about the race.  The race takes place each March but now starts in Anchorage instead of the Wasilla/Knik area.  The conditions in Alaska in March are quite harsh and the race is quite strenuous for the dogs and the “mushers”.   Mushers are the men/women who drive dog teams.  It was really interesting.  We also took a drive and saw a Greek Orthodox Church.  It was made out of logs.
