Matanuska Glacier...

Monday, June 19, 2006   We drove back to Anchorage where we filled up the RV at Costco for $2.82 per gallon.  Gas in Seward was $3.14 a gallon so it was quite a savings.   We decided to head towards Valdez.  We drove about two hours outside of Anchorage and stopped at the Grand View RV Park.  Chuck did his laundry in the RV park Laundromat.  Sue and Skip walked Lucas on the canine walk.  At the end of the trail we had the most awesome view of the glacier.  We had walked to the top of the hill and for some unknown reason neither one of us had brought a camera.  There were lots of signs (poop) that Moose frequented the area.  We walked back with Lucas continually trying to head out into the woods.  After we returned, Sue threw a load of laundry in the RV washer and made a salad and spaghetti for dinner.  On Tuesday morning,  we drove down to the Matanuska Glacier about 7 miles from where we were camped.  The glacier is 24 miles long and 4 miles wide.  We got there just as the place opened.  We drove the car several miles out to where the trail began.  It was a rugged trail but so worth the walk.  The glacier descends 12 thousand feet to the terminus.  To walk on a glacier was the most unusual feeling.  You have to stop and wonder about the history of this ice.  We took lots of pictures.  Hearing the crunch of the ice under your feet as you walked was amazing.  We are really happy that we took that excursion.
