Moose and calf

Sunday, June 25, 2006   We didn’t leave Denali area until 10:45 am and headed towards Anchorage.  Along the road we saw a moose and her calf. They were standing next to a pond.  We ended up our day arriving in Homer around 10:30 pm.  Still light out of course!  The view as you drive in overlooking Homer is absolutely breathtaking.  The water (Cook Inlet) with the mountains surrounding it was so beautiful.  We drove to the local Elks Lodge and park for the night.  There were 4 other RV’s there.  The Elks Lodge is located on the Cook Inlet so we had a wonderful view.  The next morning Skip got up early and took Lucas on a sightseeing adventure around town.  He brought home donuts and coffee…what a guy!  We spent the day sightseeing.  The town is separated from the wharf area.  To get to the wharf you need to drive down a road called Spit Road.  This is where they have lots of restaurants, gift shops, fishing tours and sightseeing tours.  We talked to a local young lady who gave us some suggestions of things to see.  We actually took her suggestions and took the ride around the Inlet and the back roads.  We drove to a restaurant she suggested but it was closed.  We continued down the back roads with outstanding scenery all around us.  We were driving along the water and going up into the hills.  Along the road, Chuck spotted a moose.  Skip backed the car up and we snapped some pictures.  Continuing up we enjoyed the countryside.  We came to the Russian Village.  The young woman was right it was nothing.  They did have a fabric shop that Sue decided to go into but was disappointed with the contents.  Did we mention that the pavement had ended and we were now driving on gravel?!   All that was in the Village were houses and the fabric store.  Locals from Homer say the Russians drive crazy and we did find that to be true.   We drove outside of Homer and ate lunch at the Caribou Family Restaurant.  It was okay but I wouldn’t go back.  Being the crazy people we are we decided to leave town.  Homer is okay if you want to go fishing but none of us wanted to spend the money to fish.  There were a couple islands we could have gone out to but we didn’t really want to do that either.  We left around 5 pm.
