Denali National Park

June 23, 2006   We drove to just outside of Denali National Park and found a rustic little RV park.  It was only a couple miles from the entrance to the Park.  With our Escapees discount it still cost us $60 for two nights.  After we ate a lunch of leftovers we drove to the park to make our reservations to take the shuttle bus into the park.  We chose the 9:30 trip the next morning.  It cost $19 per person and a park admission fee of $10 each or $20 for a family.  Since Skip is “old” he has a national parks pass and we didn’t have to pay the entrance fee.  We drove the car in the park for the allowed 15 miles but didn’t see any wildlife.  We went back to the RV and I made a multitude of beans and hamburger dish which I managed to spill all over the stove and floor when I took it out of the oven.  I only spilled ¼ of it so we still had dinner.  The clean up was messy!    After dinner Chuck and Sue went to the gift shops and Skip walked the dog.  We watched a movie and called it a night.  No TV channel here.

June 24, 2006    We left for Denali Park around 8:30am.    Denali means "high one".   Believe it or not the park is over 6 million acres.  Mt. McKinley is visible from several locations in the park but the chances of actually seeing it is less than 5%!  The only way to travel through Denali is by bus.  There are a few campsites about 20 miles in where you can camp but you still have to take the bus to see the park.  Since we were first in line we were able to get the front seats.  Skip sat on one side and Sue on the other.  The bus reminded me of one of those "prison work buses".  Chuck took a seat further back in the bus.  No one wanted the front seats because there really was only room for one person to put their feet down.  There was a wheel hump in each space.  It was a nice trip…53 miles and 6 hours.  We saw grizzly bears, caribou, dall sheep, a black bear, bald eagles and of course the ever popular chipmunks.  Going to Denali Park is a once in a lifetime adventure.  Describing what we saw does not do justice to the magnificent land and animals.  You really have to see it for yourself.  It was a long day and we were all exhausted.  Skip and Sue make beef stew and we watched another DVD movie.  Chuck and Sue both printed out their digital pictures from the Denali trip.
