From the glacier we drove to Valdez. We saw even more glaciers. We parked
at the Bayside RV Park and then walked downtown. Not much to the town but the
air was so clean and it was very peaceful. Around 5 p.m. the managers of the
park feed the gulls and bald eagles. They throw fish out for the birds to come
down and take. The bald eagles usually were the ones who got the fish. Sue and Chuck both took lots of pictures. It was lots of fun to watch.
Wednesday, June 22, 2006 found
us up early. Skip went out to find a place to change the oil in the RV. There was only one place and it was about 5 miles out of town. Skip had bought oil in Oregon so they
just charged us labor. We use synthetic oil that is hard to find. Skip is always thinking when it comes to maintaining the vehicles.
Around 10:45 we were back on the road again. We drove towards North Pole. We stopped along a mountain stream and ate lunch and enjoyed the scenery. Once we drove to North Pole we parked at Santaland RV Park. It was a long day and we just crashed. Thursday we woke up
around 5:20 when the phone rang. Skip’s sister, Paula, called to let us
know one of their cousins had died. Since we were already up Skip and Chuck drove
into Fairbanks and I stayed and did some laundry. I plan on walking over and visiting with Santa today even though I did run into him this morning doing
his laundry. We did walk over and see Santa and Mrs. Claus. Sue had her picture taken with Santa and Skip visited with Dancer.
We drove into Anchorage and went to Fred Meyer and Wal-Mart. We
had the oil changed on the car at Wal-Mart. From there we drove out on Steeser Highway where we could view and touch the Alaska Pipeline. It was very interesting and we took numerous pictures.
The hours of daylight are so long here that you really lose track. Today the sun rose at set at 12:47 am and rose at 2:59 am. Makes for lots of daylight…over 21 hours. Next we drove
out to a mining camp. The first place we drove in was abandoned. We took a picture of an old type cabin the miners use to use. After
we drove another two miles we found the other mining camp we were looking for. It
cost $37 to tour it and have a lunch of beef stew. As you would figure, we didn’t
do it. We drove back to North Pole and had Chinese food.
